My kids already know Klassen's deadpan style from the other hat books, so they were howling at the two turtles and that final twist page. The hardcover feels nice and sturdy for repeated bedtime reads, and the minimal illustrations carry so much humor.
The deadpan twist at the end caught me completely off guard, and the way the turtles' expressions carry the whole story without much text is pure Klassen magic. My kid laughed out loud at the final page, and we immediately reread it.
The two turtles' silent negotiation over that hat had my kid giggling before we even hit the twist, and the deadpan pacing is classic Klassen. We've read it three nights running and the ending still lands perfectly—great closure to the trilogy.
